Window Tinting F.A.Q.

What is a window tint?

A window tint is a thin film applied to the surface of a window for the purpose of reducing visible light, heat and ultraviolet rays (UV rays) from entering. These tints are either dyed or metalized and can come in many different shades from dark to clear. The window tint acts as a deflector, bouncing back any solar radiation through the glass.

What is Dyed Film?

A dyed tint is a window film which has been dyed. It has the characteristic of absorbing the heat from the sun, this heat is largely loss from the movement of the car, some heat does enter but the amount is minimal. Dyed tints tend to be less expensive than the higher quality alternatives.

What is a Deposited Film?

A deposited film tint is a window tint that has been deposited in a tank containing metal ingots (metal cast in a shape that is suitable for processing) such as nickel-chrome, aluminum and sometimes copper. The metal ingots are heated through a process using Argon gas, allowing for the metal to cling to the film giving the tint a metallic appearance.

What is Sputtered Film?

Sputtering is a slightly more complex process of making the window tint, also using heat. Through the sputtering process more types of metallic finishes can be achieved. Sputtered film window tints tend to be on the higher end and cost more.

What is a Hybrid Tint?

Hybrid film window tints are just that, a combination of dyed and metallic tints. By creating a tint that has both dye and metallic, you are able to have the best of both.

How long do the window tints last?

Depending on which option is chosen, tints can last well past the life of your vehicle. Dyed tints tend to break down from the sunlight and will fade over time. Hybrid window tints tend to last longer than dyed tints, while sputtered or deposited tints last the longest.

How long do I wait before I clean my new window tint?

For best results, a newly installed window tint should be left alone for a minimum of 5 days. This will allow the window tint to adhere properly to the glass. For best results and a longer lifespan for your window tint, it is even recommended that you avoid touching them for 30 days.

How do I clean my window tint?

It is best to clean your window tint using a mild soap with water. Avoid any products containing Ammonia such as Windex, this will break down the window tint film over time.

What causes window tints to bubble?

Incorrectly installed window tints or lower quality window tints will bubble because of the cheap adhesive used in the tint. This is not an issue with Montreal Auto Tints, we use only high quality products with the industries' best installers. When window tints are freshly installed, there is a chance that you will see small bubbles, this is normal and will go away in a few days once the tint has settled and properly adhered to your glass.

How to remove a window tint?

For those who decided to go ahead with installing illegal tints on your car, or for those who wish to change their current tints, there are some pointers when removing your tints. The easiest way if you plan on removing your car window tints yourself is to use a hand held steamer. Imagine somewhat the same process as removing old wallpaper. The idea is to melt the glue that is adhering the film tint to the glass. With a lot of patience and a razor blade, the tint can then be carefully removed. After the window has been cleaned thoroughly it is then ready for new tints!
